On 7 July, Boris Johnson gave a statement announcing his resignation. Following his resignation, a leadership contest was announced for the Conservative party to vote for a new leader. On 5 September it was announced that Liz Truss had won the contest with 81,326 votes, whereas Rishi Sunak only received 60,399.
On 7 September Liz Truss went to Balmoral to accept an invitation to form a new government from Her Majesty The Queen. After the invitation, Liz Truss travelled to 10 Downing Street to give her first statement as Prime Minister.
"Good afternoon,
I have just accepted Her Majesty The Queen’s kind invitation to form a new government.
Let me pay tribute to my predecessor.
Boris Johnson delivered Brexit, the Covid vaccine, and stood up to Russian aggression.
History will see him as a hugely consequential Prime Minister.
I’m honoured to take on this responsibility at a vital time for our country." -Liz Truss
