What is a UTR number?

When a person becomes self-employed they will receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) from HMRC.

A UTR will be 10 10-digit code to use as a personal reference when completing a Self-Assessment. This code will always stay the same, no matter if the person stops being self-employed or if they return to being self-employed.

The easiest way to find the UTR number is by looking at previous tax returns and letters sent from HMRC. It can also be found on the HMRC online account, which can be signed into.
